A 41-year-old woman died Thursday evening after an alleged domestic assault at a residence in Sherbrooke’s Estrie region, and her 18-year-old son is expected to face a murder charge.
Police say the investigation has determined the incident was domestic in nature.
A resident on Laiterie Street called the Sherbrooke police department around 9 p.m. to report an altercation at a neighbouring home.
When officers arrived, they found the woman seriously injured inside the residence and called paramedics, according to Sherbrooke police spokesperson Benoit Pellerin.
The victim was transported to hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
An 18-year-old man was arrested at the scene and later questioned by investigators. Police say he is expected to appear in court on a charge of murder.
According to investigators, the suspect allegedly fatally wounded his mother with a blunt object inside the family home.
A young girl was also found with an arm injury. She was taken to hospital, and her injuries are not considered life-threatening, Pellerin said.
Police have confirmed that no other suspects are being sought in connection with the case and say there is no ongoing risk to public safety related to the incident.
Investigators and forensic identification technicians remained at the scene Friday as they continued to analyze evidence and determine the full circumstances surrounding the death.
Police said no additional information will be released at this time in order to protect the integrity of the investigation and the judicial process.
The death marks the first homicide of the year within the Sherbrooke police service’s jurisdiction.
