The construction holidays, which have barely begun, are shaping up to be difficult on Quebec’s roads.
Two people lost their lives and seven others were injured in a collision involving four vehicles on Saturday night in Sacré-Cœur on the North Shore.
Emergency services were called to the scene of these multiple collisions on Route 138, around 6 p.m., near kilometer 584.
“According to initial reports, the driver of a vehicle travelling westbound lost control of his vehicle for a reason that remains to be determined. He reportedly veered off his lane and collided with three vehicles travelling in the opposite direction, heading east,” explained Sergeant Elizabeth Marquis-Guy, spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), in an interview on Sunday.
The victims were two men in their twenties who were in the first vehicle that veered off the road. A third occupant of that same vehicle was in critical condition in the hospital.
“The occupants of the other vehicles involved were also injured, but their lives are not believed to be in danger,” Sergeant Marquis-Guy stated. This refers to six other people.
“A police officer trained in collision investigation went to the scene to conduct a complete analysis of the scene and try to shed light on the causes and circumstances surrounding the event,” said the SQ spokesperson.
Already a heavy toll
The summer construction holidays began at the end of the week and will continue until August 1st.
Last year, this period was marked by the worst road safety record in the last ten years in the territory served by the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), with 38 deaths occurring in 30 collisions.
“This worrying report serves as a reminder that safety on transportation networks is a shared responsibility and that everyone can contribute to preventing tragedies through vigilance and respect for safety rules,” the SQ stated in a recent press release.
Last Friday, a head-on collision left three people dead, two adults and a child, in the municipality of Lantier, in the Laurentians region.
The head-on collision between two vehicles took place around 4 p.m. at the intersection of Rolland-Cloutier Boulevard and Lac-Dufresne Road.
A vehicle travelling northbound reportedly attempted to pass on the left to avoid a vehicle turning right in front of it, explained Geneviève Bruneau, information officer for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ). It then collided with a vehicle travelling southbound in the opposite direction.
