Michael Hendricks, a gay rights activist who fought for years in court for the right to be married in Canada – ultimately becoming part of the first same-sex couple married in Quebec – has died. He was 84.
Hendricks, who was fighting a degenerative lung disease, died by medical assistance in dying on Saturday.
The gay rights pioneer leaves behind his partner of more than 21 years, René Leboeuf. Their April 2004 wedding in a Montreal courtroom led the way for same-sex couples in Quebec looking to tie the knot.
That marriage followed six years of court battles, which came with a hefty price tag.
Before fighting for marriage equality, Hendricks and Leboeuf championed for the rights of people living with HIV.
