Premier Christine Fréchette will meet with Quebec’s lieutenant governor Thursday morning, paving the way for the start of the election campaign.
According to the premier’s schedule released Wednesday at noon, a cabinet meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m., after which Fréchette is to meet with Lieutenant Governor Manon Jeannotte.
Under Quebec’s electoral system, the Premier of Quebec must symbolically ask the lieutenant governor, the King’s representative, to dissolve the National Assembly to officially launch the election campaign.
The Quebec election is scheduled for Oct. 5, meaning the campaign will last 39 days.
The Liberals had previously announced they would kick off their own campaign in Quebec City on Thursday. Québec solidaire announced Wednesday their campaign launch would take place Thursday in Montreal.
On the eve of the dissolution, the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) held 79 seats, compared to 18 for the Liberal Party of Quebec (PLQ), 11 for Québec solidaire (QS), and seven for the Parti Québécois (PQ). The Conservative Party of Quebec held one seat, and there were nine independent members.
Fréchette succeeded François Legault a few months ago to lead the CAQ in the election campaign. She will face Liberal Charles Milliard, PQ Leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, and QS spokesperson Ruba Ghazal, who is the party’s premiership candidate. Éric Duhaime is on the ballot for the Conservatives.
