As Montrealers brace for street closures during the World Cycling Championship event later this month, BIXI announced it will boost its service to meet the expected surge in ridership.
The bike-sharing service announced Tuesday that it will add more bikes to several dozen stations in Plateau-Mont-Royal, in Old Montreal, downtown, and around Mont-Royal Park which will be affected by traffic restrictions.
The company will also have a drop-off valet service at 17 different locations, including about half a dozen at the competition venue.
About 1,000 athletes and more than half a million spectators are expected to attend the event scheduled to happen between Sept. 19 and 27.
“The World Championships are an exceptional opportunity to showcase Montréal as a cycling city, but also to remind people that cycling is an integral part of daily life for thousands of people,” said Christian Vermette, general director of BIXI Montréal.
BIXI monthly subscribers will also get an additional fifteen minutes, compared to 45 minutes, to complete their trips to mark the biking event, the company said.
