A pair from Quebec used information they gathered from real people to finance vehicles under their names.
According to Ontario Provincial Police, the two women from Quebec were charged after fake documents were used at Hawkesbury dealerships trying to buy a vehicle. This sort of fraud happened when scammers gain personal information to create “synthetic identities.”
They can use stolen credit cards, identification cards and alter insurance documents to apply for auto loans through dealerships, the release reads.
In this incident, police were able to arrest two people in connection with the fraudulent purchases.
Veronica Espinal Correa, 41, of Montreal-Nord and Adriana Saintelmy, 30, of Saint-Laurent, Que. are facing joint charges of:
- Personation with intent (identity fraud)
- Personation with Intent – intent to obtain property (identity fraud)
- Identity Theft – obtain or possess another person’s identity information
- Forgery – two counts
- Fraud over $5,000
Officials are encouraging anyone who believes they may a victim of a cybercrime to report it to their local police station and to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s online reporting system or by calling 1-888-495-8501.
