Four people climbed onto the Jacques-Cartier Bridge, which connects the Island of Montreal to the city of Longueuil, on Saturday morning; police arrested two suspects, while the other two remain at large.
Around 7 a.m., the SQ was notified that individuals had been spotted on the steel trusses of the Jacques Cartier Bridge.
“We coordinated with various partners to try to locate them on the bridge,” said Élizabeth Marquis-Guy, spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) .
It wasn’t until three and a half hours later, around 10:30 a.m., that authorities confirmed the arrest of two suspects, who will be interviewed by investigators.
“Two other individuals are still being sought, and an inspection of the bridge’s structure has not yet located them,” Marquis-Guy explained.
SQ’s Major Crimes Investigation Unit is leading the investigation to determine the individuals’ motives.
The police operation temporarily caused headaches for motorists, as traffic in several areas of the city was already heavily disrupted due to the World Cycling Championships taking place this weekend.
Around 8:00 a.m., the SQ reported on X that the bridge was completely closed in both directions. Traffic returned to normal around 11:40 a.m., police said.
