The CAQ is facing a major political reset after their electoral defeat, and now, the party must decide who will lead it through the fallout.
The party’s executive council is meeting behind closed doors Saturday to choose an interim leader, following Christine Fréchette’s resignation.
A public announcement is expected in the coming days.
The defeat marks a dramatic reversal for the CAQ, which won a 90-seat majority just four years ago. This time, the party secured just 13 per cent of the vote and failed to win a single riding.
Her departure leaves the CAQ facing questions about its future leadership, its political direction and how it plans to rebuild support across Quebec.
“I leave with the feeling of having served Quebec to the best of my ability,” Fréchette said at the National Assembly.
Fréchette, who became premier after winning the leadership race to succeed François Legault, also lost her own riding of Trois-Rivières.
