Québec solidaire (QS) is counting on experience for the crucial role of parliamentary leader, as it entrusts this function to the MNA for Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, Alexandre Leduc.
The party made the announcement Tuesday morning, a few hours before the swearing-in of its MNAs in the Red Room of the National Assembly, scheduled for the afternoon.
This will be a return to this role for Leduc, who was leader of QS from 2022 to 2025. He was then replaced by Guillaume Cliche-Rivard, who was not re-elected in the last elections.
In a statement, QS spokesperson Ruba Ghazal stressed that Leduc possesses an asset that should not be underestimated in the parliamentary contest: experience.
Ghazal said, Leduc was a “formidable parliamentary leader in dealing with the CAQ’s supermajority during the previous mandate.”
“Thanks to his keen knowledge of parliamentary procedures and regulations, the entire Solidarity caucus will come out on top in parliamentary committee and during question period,” she argued.
Leduc has represented the citizens of Hochelaga-Maisonneuve in the National Assembly since 2018.
QS also announced that the new MNA for Sherbrooke, Stéphanie Vachon, will be whip, while the MNA for Taschereau, Etienne Grandmont, will be deputy leader.
The party elected nine members of parliament on Oct. 5th. It will therefore hold two fewer seats in the National Assembly than in the last legislature.
