The West Island Blues Festival will take place this Saturday at Pine Beach Park.
The festival will be one of three stops on the West Island Blues Festival circuit this summer. The next stop will be in Pointe-Claire on August 29th.
“We’ve been on for the past 23 years and we’ve been providing good music, a good atmosphere and giving back to the community,” said Errol Johnson, the co-founder of the festival and DDO city councillor. “The event started from nothing but with time, it grew and took the form that it has today.
“We had no stage. And the beauty of it, it was the help of all the people who participated.”
The festival, an event described as being organized by the community and for the community, will merge with Dorval en fête this year.
“Dorval en fête is an activity that we’ve had for a long time in Dorval. It’s our traditional cultural day,” said Marc Doret, the mayor of Dorval.
“When we came along and partnered with the Blues Fest, we thought what a great opportunity to merge the two. So we go from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. with a little break in between the two, a one-hour break. But it just makes a fantastic day here in the park.”
The event will end up helping some beneficiary organizations, Literacy Unlimited being one of them.
“In terms of actual impact, it allows us, for example, to purchase books for our family literacy program,” said Josephine Pietracupa, the president and a member of the board of directors at Literacy Unlimited. “It allows us to buy and purchase iPads for our digital literacy program for the seniors. So it basically allows us to purchase the tools that we need to be able to give our programs.”
The weather won’t affect the activities, as the festival will be held wherever there is sun or rain. More information is available at the West Island Blues festival website.
