U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says its brokers in Canada don’t carry firearms, following questions on a possible ICE presence at upcoming FIFA World Cup video games.
An ICE spokesperson says personnel from ICE’s Homeland Safety Investigations department work with Canadian companions on joint investigations involving narcotics, weapons smuggling and human trafficking.
The spokesperson says these brokers don’t conduct operational actions in Canada, reminiscent of executing search warrants or making arrests.
ICE at the moment has 5 workplaces in Canada, together with workplaces in Toronto and Vancouver, cities which can host World Cup video games this summer time.
Toronto metropolis council final month handed a movement introduced ahead by Mayor Olivia Chow opposing the presence of any ICE brokers at upcoming video games happening within the metropolis.
A spokesperson for federal Public Security Minister Gary Anandasangaree stated final week ICE has no authority or jurisdiction on Canadian soil.
