Quebec’s police oversight agency is conducting an investigation after a person was shot and killed by provincial police during an operation west of Montreal.
The Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI) reports that police received a call Tuesday around 4:30 p.m. reporting an armed person in a crisis situation at a residence in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, in the Montérégie region.
According to the BEI, the suspect opened fire on officers who had responded outside the house, and the officers returned fire.
The person was transported to the hospital in critical condition. They later died of their injuries.
Officers from the Montreal police (SPVM) were called in to assist with the investigation, the BEI stated.
The agency is also asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has video footage of it to come forward online or visit the mobile command post set up near the scene of the shooting.
