The body of a man who had been missing for two weeks was found in the St. Lawrence River near Marsoui, in the Gaspé–Îles-de-la-Madeleine region, shortly before 10:30 a.m. on Sunday morning.
The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) was notified of the discovery of the body by a member of the public.
The victim was subsequently identified as Pepito Labador, a 45-year-old Montrealer who had been reported missing since July 19.
Two days earlier, emergency services had been called to respond to reports that two people had been seen in distress on the St. Lawrence River in the Marsoui area, near kilometer 914 of Route 132.
According to information gathered by the SQ, the two men were fishing at the edge of a rocky outcrop when one of them reportedly lost his footing and fell into the water. The second man then reportedly attempted to help him before being swept away by the current as well. Both men died in the accident.
