Police are coming forward with details about a 10-month investigation spanning Calgary and Edmonton and leading to a multi-million drug bust in which weapons and a large stash of money were also seized.
Authorities say the case involves a province-wide drug trafficking network that included vehicles with hidden compartments moving drugs and cash primarily between Alberta’s two major cities.
“Over $7 million worth of drugs, $1 million cash, and 17 firearms were seized by ALERT following a series of search warrants that took place in Edmonton and Calgary. The seizure ranks amongst one of ALERT’s largest,” states a news release.
Over the course of 10 months, police say they searched homes in Calgary, Edmonton, St. Albert, and Sturgeon County with six of the most recent raids taking place July 16.
The ALERT team of police add that the case was based on “criminal intelligence into wholesale drug transporters”, and 66.5 kilograms of cocaine was seized, with an estimated street value of $6.65 million.
Authorities also located a large amount of cash: $1,156,863, which is the largest cash seizure recorded by ALERT in the agency’s 20-year history.
Arrests made but no charges yet
While several suspects were arrested, police say no charges have been laid as yet. Investigators are said to be preparing reports and disclosure for Crown Counsel.
Meanwhile, Alert released a list of drugs and more that they found:
- 1.5 kilograms of fentanyl
- 3,494 suspected fentanyl pills
- 1.5 kilograms of methamphetamine
- 2.3 kilograms of psilocybin mushroom
- 17 firearms
- Eight vehicles
