Montreal designer Hubert Poe is wearing his Pride on his sleeve, with a number of his designs set to walk down the Olympic Park runway during Fierté Montréal’s “Le Show du 20e” on Saturday evening.
Put together by Michael Venus, also known as Miss Cotton, organizers say the show will be a flamboyant celebration of queer nights, with a series of multidisciplinary performances by local artists and collectives paying tribute to the 2SLGBTQIA+ struggles of the past decades.
Set to hit the runway this Pride weekend, Poe says his designs aim to celebrate identity, inclusion and authenticity, all while calling back to past artistic movements and eras of fashion.
“There are gonna be three designers that are gonna show some like 80s 90s stuff,” he told CityNews. “It’s gonna be really cool. Very club kid, very eclectic.”
“If it shines, if it’s striking,” he added. “Sign me up.”
With a background in fashion design, Poe says he doesn’t have a specific process of creation, instead letting himself be inspired by different fabrics and silhouettes.
“Sometimes, the idea just pops up in my head and I just go find the fabric that works well,” he explained. “Sometimes, a lot of times, I draw and I imagine the clothes in black and then after the color comes in, so I see the silhouette first and then I add the color. Sometimes it depends also what fabric I find. It really really varies.”
Far from a fashion novice, Poe’s designs have been seen around the country, gracing the runway of Canada’s Drag Race and been worn by queens such as Suki Doll, Rita Baga and Giselle Lullaby. For him, the most important aspect of the design process is creating a striking garment.
“It’s really about the visual impact,” he said. “And that’s what I love to do.”
Admission to “Le Show du 20e” is free, with the event set to run from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Aug. 8 at Esplanade du Parc Olympique.
