Montrealers already know that the city is a foodie’s dream, packed with thousands of diverse restaurants waiting to be discovered and devoured, but now Google Maps is taking a closer look through data on which are the most sought-after.
The company analyzed a year’s worth of data to understand culinary trends in ten major cities around the world, then compiled a first-of-its-kind list of the most popular restaurants and must-try spots within each city.
The food ranking list includes Montreal, Atlanta, Chicago, London, Melbourne, New York, San Francisco, Santiago, Seattle and Tokyo. The analyzed data was compiled based on reviews, ratings and directions requests from Google Maps.
Google found that Montrealers tend to have a strong sweet tooth. Mentions of cinnamon buns have jumped 84 per cent in one year. Top bakeries mentioned were Guayabito, Daddy Roll and Bernice.
Data showed the food and beverage items on the rise include shawarma sandwiches, which increased by 59 per cent, while mentions of matcha have risen by 37 per cent in one year.
Top spots for which people requested directions the most in the city include Bar George, Ma Poule Mouillée, Schwartz’s Deli, La Banquise and Yokato Yokabai Ramen.
To wash everything down, in the drink category, Montrealers requested directions most often to Crew Collective & Café, September Cafe, Café Olimpico, Café Alphabet and Maison Café.
Montreal ranked eighth worldwide in the top-reviewed spots for the “big portions and small checks” category with Dinette Dorée. Atlanta took home first place with its BACHI BOX restaurant.
