Montreal will host Canada’s first large-scale lantern flight this weekend as 88 Fest, The Lantern Release takes place from Friday to Sunday at the Jardin des Floralies in Parc Jean-Drapeau.
The family-friendly festival, organized by Asiasie in collaboration with the Asian Night Market, will bring thousands of lanterns together each evening from 8 to 8:30 p.m. Visitors will have the opportunity to write a wish or message on their lantern before watching it rise into the sky.
The event will also feature six Asian food vendors and one beverage vendor, with gates opening daily at 4 p.m. Admission is free, although lanterns must be purchased separately.
Organizers say the LED lanterns use helium and remain attached to cords throughout the event, with visitors able to take them home or return them for collection.
The event runs until 10 p.m. each night.
