The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) says it will be stepping up police presence in the province for the two-week construction holiday.
The SQ says it’s increasing its operations on roads, trails and bodies of water — from July 17 to Aug. 2.
Authorities say during Quebec’s construction holiday last year there were 38 deaths, the worst in the past 10 years, linked to collisions, including with off-road vehicles.
“This alarming statistic serves as a reminder that safety on transportation networks is a shared responsibility and that everyone can help prevent tragedies by staying vigilant and following safety rules,” the SQ said in a news release.
About one-third of Quebecers take time off during this period, which increases traffic on the road network and crowds on bodies of water and trails.
Quebec’s auto-insurance board, SAAQ, also warned drivers that speeding was a factor in more than a quarter of the deaths reported in the summer months. Half the fatal collisions also occurred within 15 kilometres of the victims’ homes.
“When driving on a familiar road, it’s easy to become less vigilant, underestimate risks, or get distracted,” SAAQ said. “Every trip deserves the same level of attention, from start to finish.”
Police are urging Quebecers to follow the rules and be safe, such as wearing helmets while riding ATVs and personal flotation devices while on the water.
“The SQ urges all users of transportation networks to travel safely and to enjoy their recreational and tourism activities in compliance with applicable laws and regulations,” the Quebec provincial police force said.
