The Quebec Liberals, led by Charles Milliard, will form the official Opposition for the third straight election.
The Liberals and leader Milliard were running a strong second with the lead in about 40 ridings two hours after the polls closed.
Milliard was declared elected in his riding of Orford — in the province’s Eastern Townships — shortly after 9 p.m.
Speaking to supporters in Orford, Milliard said the new PQ minority government has responsibility to listen to other parties.
“(The result) means that the Parti Québécois does not have all the powers to do whatever they want,” he said. “They’re going to have to discuss, collaborate, and we’ll be collaborating on some issues, but obviously not on the main issue (of a referendum).”
PQ was on track to capture nearly 60 seats as the final votes were counted, falling short of the 64 needed to form a majority in Quebec’s legislature.
