Maude Charron’s still got it.
The Quebec weightlifter made history in Glasgow on Tuesday, winning her third consecutive title at the Commonwealth Games.
It was Charron’s third gold medal after wins in 2018 and 2022.
“I’m very satisfied. What it means for me is that I’m still in the game, I can still win medals,” Charron said.
“I can still make Canada proud and can make myself proud of my results.”
The 33-year-old Rimouski native, who’s also a two-time Olympic medallist, became the second woman to win three consecutive golds in weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games.
Charron, competing in the women’s 63-kilogram category, registered successful lifts of 102kg in the snatch and 130kg in the clean and jerk for a winning total of 232. Both her lifts were Commonwealth Games records.
“Just Commonwealth in general, we call them the friendly games,” she said. “They are games, and any type of games… is good game experience to put in your backpack. You learn a lot from them. There’s obviously a lot of eyeballs with major games. It’s an opportunity for promoting your sport, make people talk about it, learn about what weightlifting is.
“The more moments we can talk about amateur sport, the better. We have some issues. Financially, obviously, we talk a lot about this in the news lately. There’s a lot of potential and there’s a lot of people who want to try those sports, and I feel like showcasing all types of sport make people realize that they might pick up a new sport and really love it and be good at it.”
In addition to her three Commonwealth golds, Charron also won gold in Tokyo 2020 and silver in Paris 2018.
