Drivers looking to ditch their cars in favour of public transit are getting another shot in the arm.
The Réseau express métropolitain (REM) announced that more than 1,000 parking spaces are becoming free at stations across the Greater Montreal area.
The light-rail network said the changes are part of adjustments to better meet the habits and needs of riders.
About 500 parking spots at Bois-Franc, Sunnybrooke, Pierrefonds-Roxboro and Sainte-Dorothée were converted to free one in recent days.
REM riders using the Brossard station will get free access to 500 more parking spots starting Sept. 1 and those using Grand-Moulin will benefit from 57 more at a future date.
Starting Sept. 3, there will be 360 free parking spaces at the Panama station and 75 paid parking spaces.
With the conversion, REM said it has also ended advance daily reservations, however commuters can still make the reservation for the day directly at the parking lot.
Monthly parking pass holders will also remain available.
