Over a million Montrealers are choosing to cycle, according to the 2025 “State of Cycling” report by cycling advocacy group Vélo Québec.
In 2025, 1.185 million people on the island of Montreal cycled, including 941,000 adults and 244,000 children.
The report shows 58 per cent of the adult population cycled – 68 per cent in the central area of Montreal.
There are 78 per cent that chose biking for their daily commute, the highest number seen across the province.
The report shows Bixi contributed to the rising number of cyclists with 359 000 people having used a Bixi bike in 2025.
The findings also show that the bike network has grown by 10 per cent and much more so when you look at bike paths. There were 530 kms of bike paths in 2025 – growing by 85 per cent compared to 2020.
Vélo Québec says more Montrealers would cycle if the network were expanded, with 17 per cent of people who do not ride a bike saying they would if the cycling conditions were safer.
The report also found that cycling is a year-round of activity, with 38 per cent of people riding in the winter between December and March.
