Suspect arrested in Mexico in connection with 2025 Montreal murder

A 22-year-old man wanted in connection with a 2025 murder in Montreal has been arrested in Mexico, according to Montreal police (SPVM).

The SPVM said Gabriel Lavoie was arrested Thursday in Playa del Carmen. He was the subject of an arrest warrant for murder and remains in custody while extradition proceedings get underway.

The arrest marks the third in the case stemming from the death of a 34-year-old man in the Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough on March 14, 2025.

Police said officers responded shortly after midnight to a report of an injured person near Ontario and Saint-Germain streets. The victim had suffered lower-body injuries from a sharp object and was taken to hospital, where he later died.

Two other suspects, Dave Lambert-Chouinard and Valdano Saint-Hillien, were arrested in Montreal days after the killing. Both are facing manslaughter charges.

The SPVM said the latest arrest was made with the assistance of Mexican authorities, the RCMP and Interpol.
