The diver injured after contact with a white shark in Percé was conscious and was able to remove his equipment himself once out of the water, according to Plongée Percé.
The non-profit organization gave an update on social media on Friday about the incident that occurred in the Gaspé Peninsula last Wednesday.
The expedition consisted of six divers, divided into two teams. The injured diver was in a team with an instructor and an instructor-in-training, according to the report of Plongée Percé.
During the incident, the instructor was alerted by a noise. “When he turned around, he found that a white shark was nearby and that the third diver was in contact with it. The shark then disappeared in the space of a few seconds,” says the organization.
The team then quickly got back into the boat. Conscious, the injured diver removed his equipment himself.
First aid and contact with the Coast Guard were immediately carried out. An ambulance was waiting for the diver at the Percé wharf.
The other three divers in the group were unaware of the incident during their dive.
As a precautionary measure, all Percé Diving activities have been suspended for the rest of the season.
According to the most recent data from the Canadian Shark Attack Registry, only 15 incidents have been confirmed in Canada out of the 30 attacks reported in the last 330 years.
