McGill University’s track and field team could be returning to the university’s athletics program.
The first recommendation made by the Athletics and Recreation Strategic Planning Task Force in a recent report is to “reinstate the men’s and women’s track and field programs.”
That report will be presented to McGill’s Senate on Nov. 11. It will then be subject to approval by Dec. 2 and presented to the Board of Governors on Dec. 10.
If approved, the plan would be implemented in phases starting next spring.
A spokesperson for McGill told CityNews the university “welcomes the recommendations” in the task force.
“Should the report’s recommendations be adopted, McGill will begin their implementation, including developing a viable implementation plan to bring Track and Field back as a varsity team for the 2027-28 season,” the spokesperson said in a statement.
McGill announced last November it was cutting 25 varsity team and clubs across 15 sports – including track and field – citing budget, personnel and facility space constraints.
The decision had profound repercussions on hundreds of student-athletes.
