Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada says the new Parti Québécois government could be a chance for more collaboration.
“Today we have a new premier who represents a Montreal riding, and this is an opportunity to strengthen the partnership between Quebec and our city,” she said.
Speaking after the PQ’s victory, the mayor said homelessness will be among Montreal’s top priorities as it works with the new government.
Martinez Ferrada pointed to the fact incoming premier Paul St-Pierre Plamondon represents the National Assembly seat for Camille-Laurin, based in Montreal’s East End. The mayor said this fact should help create a stronger partnership between the provincial government and Montreal.
She also referred to the ongoing situation around the “now famous” Notre-Dame encampment, located near the Camille-Laurin riding, as a reminder of the urgency to address homelessness in the city.
“We need lasting solutions, housing and greater involvement from the health-care system,” Martinez Ferrada said, adding that the goal is to better support vulnerable people living on the streets.
The mayor also identified public transit and infrastructure as priorities for discussions with the new minority government.
Martinez Ferrada said she had a “really good conversation” with St-Pierre Plamondon shortly before speaking with reporters Tuesday and said she was looking forward to working with the new government.
She said the priorities are important not only for Montreal, but for Quebec as a whole.
